Conference Speaker: Xiu-Min Li MD, PhD–Treatment for Eczema with Traditional Chinese Medicine: from Practice and Research Perspective

Dr. Xiu-Min Li

Dr. Xiu-Min Li–founder of the East-West Integrative Medical Symposium for Immunology & Wellness Clinical Practice, Science, & Technology – is a full professor in the Departments of Pathology, Immunology and Microbiology, and Otolaryngology at New York Medical College/ Westchester Medical Center. She has pioneered research into the efficacy, safety and mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), for immune disorders. Her research has been funded by the NIH, industry, private foundations, and family donations with over 100 publications in these fields. Dr. Li obtained her medical degree at the(Zhengzhou and a Master’s degree in Clinical Pediatric Immunology from the Graduate School of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (Beijing). She worked as an Attending Pediatrician at China-Japan Friendship Hospital (Beijing). She was a Visiting Scientist at Stanford and postdoctoral fellow in Clinical Immunology at Johns Hopkins where she was appointed Instructor in 1997. Dr. Li joined the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Mount Sinai when it was established in 1997, where she rose to the rank of tenured Professor. She has chaired prominent committees about the use of alternative medicines for allergic diseases at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) and internationally and is the recipient of the Future of Health Technology Award in Cambridge, Mass. in 2016 and the Novel Research in Chinese Medicine Overseas Award in Beijing in 2017. 

Her Triple Therapy for eczema is explicated in the upcoming book, Treating Eczema with Traditional Chinese Medicine (World Scientific Publishing–Henry Ehrlich co-author).

Conference Speaker: Jera Qianhui Zhang, MS, MA, RD–Diet, Microbiome and Allergy Prevention

Allergy parents and patients wonder about how their gut health diet influenced their condition to begin with and what they can do going forward. Jera Qianhui Zhang will address these concerns. She is a licensed dietitian, a certified lactation counselor, and trained in the Low FODMAP Diet Protocol for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. She is also a doctoral student in Behavioral Nutrition at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research interests include digestive health, the gluten-free diet, and immune-related disorders. She currently serves as the Chair of AAPI Professional Development Committee in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Conference Speaker: Anish R Maskey, BS, PhD student–IgE and Non-IgE medication options for EoE and potential treatment with Traditional Chinese medicine and compounds

Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) has been a stubborn problem for many food-allergy sufferers. The esophagus is infiltrated by white blood cells called eosinophils–the same culprit involved in cases of allergic asthma–causing constriction, difficulty swallowing, and eventual tissue remodeling. Abstinence and swallowing oral steroids have been the only recourse, with the recent addition of the the biologic dupilumab. Mr. Maskey is PhD student in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at New York Medical College. He has been working in Dr. Xiu-Min Li’s lab since 2018. Primarily his work focuses on understanding immunological mechanisms underlying Traditional Chinese Medicine formula and natural flavonoid purified compound improving clinical GI symptoms related to EoE. He has also been actively working on other collaborative projects with his NYMC colleagues.

Conference Speaker: Anna Nowak-Wegrzyn, M.D., PhD–Novel Therapies for Food Allergy

Dr. Anna Nowak-Wegrzyn

Those who have followed this website since its inception will remember the name Anna Nowak-Wegrzyn, M.D., PhD. In a long-ago post she discussed her work with the US Department of Defense on a food allergy policy for recruits*. She is now Professor of Pediatrics at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital and board chair of the American Board of Allergy & Immunology. Her research interests focus on egg and milk allergies, baked milk and baked egg diets, food-induced anaphylaxis in children, novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to food allergy, oral tolerance development, and in particular food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES). Anna is also chair of the Medical Advisory Board for the International FPIES Organization and has led the international effort to write the first Consensus Guidelines for Diagnosis and Management of FPIES, published in 2017. She is an Associate Editor for the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

Conference Speaker July 24: Jan Geliebter, PhD–The Role of Microbiota in Eczema

Dr. Geliebter will speak on the interplay between microbiota, the immune system and genetics, as well as the complexities of current data on microbiota and pro- and prebiotics treatments. He received his Undergraduate Degree in Biology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and his PhD Degree in Microbiology and Immunology from State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. His postdoctoral studies on the genetics of major histocompatibility complex were carried out in the laboratory of Dr. Stanley Nathenson at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Geliebter has held faculty positions at The Rockefeller University, The Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is currently a Professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and the Department of Otolaryngology at New York Medical College.

Dr. Geliebter’s Laboratory has been engaged in funded research and projects/programs include molecular pathogenesis and hormonal determinants of thyroid cancer and Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of allergy/eczema. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers and numerous book chapters.

Conference Speaker July 24: Raj Tiwari PhD–Western diet and false alarm hypothesis in food allergy

The Western diet is high in substances called high-glycation end products that keep the immune system in a vigilant inflammatory state. When an individual is also food allergic, the presence of allergens may provoke an excessive response that mimics a normal mechanism for eliminating dead or dying tissue. The combination can be deadly.

Raj Tiwari, Ph.D., is the Interim Chair and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and Graduate Program Director. Dr. Tiwari joined the NYMC faculty in 1996 and has maintained an active, funded research program in immunological aspects of cancer biology. Dr. Tiwari received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry from the University of Calcutta in India and completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Toronto in Canada and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Prior to joining the NYMC community, he held faculty positions at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Conference Speaker July 24, 2022: Nan Yang, PhD–Cross immune mechanisms between COVID and food allergy and potential therapy

Dr. Yang oversees the chemistry research group in Dr. Xiu-Min Li’s team and is highly involved in the designing research, new treatment formulation, active component identification, and biological activity investigation. He is going to talk about the immune linkage between two headline disorders and possible treatment for both. He is Research Assistant Professor, Department of Immunology and Microbiology, New York Medical College. Director of GMP facilities of General Nutraceutical Technology, LLC. Dr. Yang has accumulated tremendous experience in both biology and analytical chemistry, such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS). His research has focused on investigating the mechanisms underlying allergic diseases including allergic asthma and food allergies, and on developing new treatments for these diseases. He has isolated and identified several bioactive compounds from herbal medicines and investigated their activities and mechanisms both in vitro and in vivo. He has also been involved in several clinical studies and monitoring the quality and safety of novel interventions used as treatment for allergic diseases.

Conference Speaker July 24, 2022: Kamal Srivastava, PhD on Biomarkers for Eczema

Kamal joined the Li lab in 1999, very shortly after it was established, and in the years since has played an integral role in preclinical development and testing of TCM herbal formulas for food allergy and asthma. She is Manager of Scientific Affairs at Elysium Health, and a consultant to General Nutraceutical Technology, LLC and Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at New York Medical College. She received her bachelor’s degree from Queens College of The City University of New York and PhD from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Mount Sinai. She has been the lead scientist on several animal model studies evaluating herbal formulas such as ASHMI and FAHF-2, which moved on to clinical trials, and has been lead author on several key manuscripts resulting from these studies. Her current projects include development and testing of novel nanoparticle and herbal solutions for delivery of Berberine for reduction of IgE and preclinical research into combination TCM/OIT therapy for food allergy. She is also the author, with Xiu-Min Li, of a chapter called “Mechanism of Eczema, Biomarkers, and Perspectives of TCM Therapeutic Targets” in the new book, Treating Eczema with Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Conference Speaker: Dr. Anne Maitland, MD, PhD—Integrative Therapy for Mast Cell Activation Disorder

Anne Mailland MD, PhD

Anne Maitland is both an MD and a PhD. She claims that key to her interest in diagnosing and treating patients with mast cell activation disorders lies in the difference between the ways she was trained to think for the two degrees. She says, “MDs are taught to profile patients. PhDs are taught to ask the right questions.” Instead of treating, say, atopic dermatitis or asthma as they become symptomatic, she learned to investigate the ties between these conditions. “The immune system, the respiratory system, and the digestive system are all tied together by the nervous system.”

Anne says that there’s a feeling in medicine that “if you can’t test for something, it doesn’t exist.” The time pressures of doctor-patient interaction compound the dilemma. “Neglecting patient stories has created a desert in which snake oil finds a niche.” By 2013, Maitland had begun to develop a reputation for diagnosing and treating mast cell disorders, after seeing a number of patients with connective tissue disease, but for whom data didn’t support a diagnosis of typical food allergies or of mastocytosis. In these patients, the skin, the gut, and the lungs, where the body confronts the environment, were all reactive.

Her fellow allergists, she believes, miss this diagnosis because they are primarily focused on the adaptive or acquired immune system. They test for IgE-mediated mast cell disorders, which are responsible for most atopy, and neglect the larger functioning of the mast cell in innate immunity. She says, “the immune system is like the Bible. It has an Old Testament and a New Testament. Studying only IgE-mediated mast cell activation is like studying the Bible only through the lens of the New Testament.”

Anne says that mast cells don’t start life as a problem. Trained as first responders at our borders to the outside world, “mast cells go through basic training, then are shipped out and stationed to different parts of our bodies. So rookie mast cells stationed in the skin differentiate to the needs of that skin environment, compared to mast cells situated in the gut or respiratory tract. Similar to a new recruit sent to a base in Hawaii versus Iraq.” Mast cells can become dangerous if a subset of them “goes rogue or mast cells are being great soldiers, but following bad orders.” Armies of rogue mast cells are rare (mastocytosis), but most allergists are familiar with mast cells following bad orders, such as reacting to IgE targeting harmless substances or allergens.   “Patients with connective tissue disorders appear to have mast cells that are following bad orders, but we just haven’t figured out where these bad orders are coming from–the surrounding connective tissue, the local nerves, other local components of the immune system.”

Today, Dr. Maitland is a prominent authority on mast cell disorders in private practice in Tarrytown, New York who has referred many patients to Dr. Xiu-Min Li, and is scheduled to join Dr. Li as a regular consultant in her clinic in Mamaroneck, New York.

Conference Speaker: Belinda Sheary, MD–Everything You Should Know About Topical Steroid Withdrawal

You’ve heard from a patient. Now you will hear from a doctor. Topical Steroid Withdrawal, aka Topical Steroid Addiction, Red-Skin Syndrome, and other evocative names, is as grim as it sounds. Dr. Sheary, who was introduced to us by Dr. Peter Lio, a familiar name to long-time readers of this website, is a general practitioner in Sydney, Australia. She completed her medical degree at the University of Newcastle and obtained her Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2007. She has published a number of research papers on this topic since 2016. She has also contributed a chapter to Treating Eczema with Traditional Chinese Medicine (World Scientific Publishing) by Dr. Xiu-Min Li and Henry Ehrlich.
